In the winter of 2004-2005, Annie realized that she was in a cooking rut. She was cooking the same set of meals over and over again. At about the same time, she had another realization: all of her friends, many around the country, were also in cooking ruts, but with different sets of recipes. What if everyone shared their recipes?
The problem was how would everyone share recipes? There were sites out there where users could add recipes, but they were hard-to-use and not ideally suited for sharing with friends in a group. She pressed her boyfriend Dave and Dave's brother, Brian, into service, and in short order they produced the first version of Cooking Friend. Their friends added recipes and the idea worked.
A year after Cooking Friend launched, Dave and Brian thought it could use an update. By summer, they got around to actually making the updates, and by the end of the summer the site didn't work any more. (Oops.) Dave decided to go it alone, and by Cooking Friend's two year anniversary the site was back and better than ever.
