This is a very rich bread, I found different recipes on the Internet and mixed them together.
Directions
-
Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl.
- Stir in milk, 3/4 c. sugar, salt, 3 eggs, butter and 3 c. flour.
- Beat until smooth.
- Stir in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle.
- Turn dough onto lightly floured surface.
- Knead until smooth and elastic (5 min.)
- Place in greased bowl, turn greased side up.
- Cover - let rise in warm place until double (1 1/2 - 2 hours). Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.
- Punch down dough.
- Divide into halves. Shape each half into a round, slightly flat loaf.
- Place each loaf in a greased 9" round layer pan.
- Cover - let rise until double (1 hour).
- Preheat oven to 350* F.
- Beat remaining egg slightly, brush over loaves.
- Sprinkle with 1 tsp. Sugar.
- Bake until loaves are golden brown (35-45 min.)
Before you begin
Prep time: 3 hours
Cook time: 40 minutes @ 350* F
Yields: 2 loaves
Ingredients
-
2 packages active dry yeast (4.5 tsp)
- 1/2 c. warm water (105 - 110* F)
- 1 c. lukewarm milk (scalded, then cooled)
- 3/4 c. granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 c. butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. granulated sugar
.
This recipe doesn't list the total amount of flour, so I kept adding more until it seemed right (5-6 cups). The result tasted good but was bit dry.
